INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The man accused of shooting and killing IMPD Officer Perry Renn made his first appearance in court on Tuesday.

Major Davis Jr. was escorted into a Marion County courtroom in a wheelchair.

Murder charges against 25-year-old Davis were announced by Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry last week.

Prosecutors say Davis used an AK-47 style weapon to shoot Officer Renn. He was also shot during the exchange of gunfire and was in the hospital until Friday.

Inside the courtroom Tuesday, Marion Superior Court Judge Grant Hawkins entered a plea of not guilty for Davis. During the hearing, Davis spoke softly and was asked to speak up several times by Judge Hawkins.

At one point, Hawkins gave a short recess so Davis could read the charges he’s facing.

Currently, Davis is charged with murder, which carries 45 to 65 years in prison if convicted. He is also facing a gun enhancement charge of up to 20 years.

Hawkins appointed a public defender for Davis. A pretrial hearing has been set for Sept. 3, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.
