Police: Tips from community led to arrest in deadly robbery

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrested an Indianapolis man for the murder of a gas station clerk back in June.

IMPD Chief Rick Hite said more than 100 tips from the community eventually led to the identification and arrest of Desi Thomas, 22.

Police said Thomas robbed Joe’s Junction in the 5200 block of West Troy Avenue on June 4. During the robbery, Thomas shot Harry Briggs, 45. Briggs died two days later in the hospital.

Surveillance video showed Thomas skipping away from the scene following the shooting.

Police arrested Thomas on Wednesday afternoon at a home at 3307 Maumee Court with the assistance of the IMPD SWAT Team, Violent Crimes Unit, and the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force.

“The joint efforts of investigators and community tips led to the capture of the suspect in the Joe’s Junction murder.  You said something, and we as a team did something. The partnership between community and police works,” Chief Hite said.

Thomas was formally charged with class A felony murder and robbery. He is being held at the Arrestee Processing Center with no bond.

Thomas will have an initial hearing Friday morning at the Marion County Courthouse at 9 a.m.

24-Hour News 8 will have a crew at Thomas’ hearing. Briggs family members are expected to attend.
