Thousands expected downtown for IBE weekend events

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indiana Black Expo’s Summer Celebration may have kicked off last week, but the next few days are by far the busiest.

One major event offered is one of the largest health fairs in the world, so folks can take advantage of free health screenings.

Concerts are always popular, with an outdoor music festival Friday on the American Legion Mall and another concert Saturday inside Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Performers include Keith Sweat, Anthony Hamilton and Babyface.

New this year, because of high demand, two days of boxing are scheduled instead of one.

Also new this year is a fashion show.

Organizers say the summer celebration has events for all ages.

“Over 100 new vendors, boxing, fashion shows, hair shows, celebrity basketball games, slam dunk contests, Real Talk Teen Forum, so there’s a lot of activities going on over the weekend,” IBE President and CEO Tanya Bell said.

As for security downtown, IMPD says officers will enforce curfew for minors and focus on crowd control.

IMPD Chief Rick Hite said people should head downtown with the right spirit, but those who act up can expect to be detained by police.
