LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) – The Lawrence Fraternal Order of Police helped more than 250 kids pick out backpacks and supplies for a new year on Saturday.

The officers worked specifically with elementary students in Lawrence Township Schools at the community’s local Wal-Mart. They say the opportunity teaches a life lesson before kids head off to learn different kinds in the classroom.

“We’re out here, we’re trying to tell the kids we’re the good guys. Come see us, come talk to us, chat with us in line. We’re not the bad guys,” Sgt. Tom Ashcraft said.

The FOP says it served between 250 and 300 children through the giveaway. Organizers estimate each child went home with $30 worth of school supplies. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
