IFD: Truck caught on fire inside of car wash

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Nearly 15 fire crews battled a fire at a car wash on the city’s south side Sunday afternoon.

A fire broke out at Hog Wash Carwash, at the corner of Shelby Street and E. Sumner Avenue, around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Fire officials said a woman was borrowing a truck and she wanted to clean it out before returning it to the owner. While she was inside the car wash, she noticed the truck had flames coming from the engine compartment. She tried to put it out, but it quickly got out of control.

There is an apartment inside of the car wash, but the people in there escaped. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters said there is also a nursing home next to Hog Wash Carwash. Nobody had to be evacuated, but patients did have to be moved to the opposite end of the building for safety measures.

The truck inside of the car wash is a total loss.

Fire officials estimate the building has about $300,000 worth of damage.

12 IFD units and two Beech Grove units responded to the fire.
