SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — State highway officials are expecting to open the new stretch of U.S. 31 between South Bend and Plymouth in northern Indiana by the end of August.

Highway department spokesman Matt Deitchley says some lane restrictions are expected for a time while construction work continues at the northern and southern ends of the new section.

Deitchley tells WSBT-TV those restrictions are expected to be lifted by the end of this year.

The $221 million project includes about 15 miles of new roadway built to interstate standards that goes around some small towns.

It’s part of a reconstruction project for U.S. 31 linking Indianapolis and South Bend. Other major parts include the new bypass around Kokomo and highway upgrades in the northern suburbs of Indianapolis. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
