PERU, Ind. (WISH) — Police in Peru arrested a man after they say he punched an officer in the face.

Court documents state the officer was on patrol last Friday when he saw 51-year-old Matt Shuey lean out his car window, flip him off and curse at him. The officer then pulled Shuey over for not wearing a seatbelt.

When the officer asked for his driver’s license and registration, Shuey cussed at the officer and threatened to hurt him.

While the officer was trying to put Shuey’s arm behind his back, Shuey punched the officer in the face, 24-Hour News 8’s news partners at The Pharos-Tribune report.

Another officer helped restrain Shuey, who was then arrested. A passenger in the car later told police Shuey mistook the officer for another Peru police officer he didn’t like.

Shuey was taken to the Miami County Jail and preliminarily charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and intimidation.
