MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – A woman has died and a young child was flown to Riley after a car rolled over and hit a utility pole in Madison County.

The crash happened on State Road 9, at Cottonwood Drive, around 6 p.m.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, a van was heading northbound on SR 9 when he lost control, crossed the center line, crashed into a ditch and then hit a utility pole.

The electricity was cut off for the pole as crews worked to get the victims out of the car.

A man was removed from the van and taken to Community Hospital in Anderson. He was later taken to Methodist in Indianapolis.

As crews were working on getting the woman out of the van, they heard the cries of a young child. The child, who was found in a car seat, was flown to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis.

The Madison County Coroner Office pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Police said several power lines fell in the area when the car hit the utility pole, which made it difficult to get everyone out of the vehicle.

The coroner will release the victim’s name pending family notification.
