INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police are investigating a fatal crash after a deputy driving a Marion County Sheriff’s Office prisoner transport van hit a pedestrian.

It happened in the 5200 block of Madison Avenue around 9:45 p.m. Thursday.

The driver of the van was heading southbound on Madison Avenue when he hit a pedestrian who investigators say may have been lying in the roadway beforehand.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and identified as an older man.

The driver of the van was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital for a standard blood draw to test his blood for drugs and alcohol. He was not hurt.

At this time, investigators do not believe alcohol or speed were contributing factors in the crash.

The name of the man killed has not been released, pending an autopsy, which has been scheduled for Friday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
