Homes evacuated after police chase leads to gas line rupture

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police evacuated homes on Indy’s east side Thursday night after a police chase ended with a car rupturing a gas line.

According to IMPD, a car was pulled over during a traffic stop but the driver fled, leading police on a pursuit. The car then hit a vacant house which ruptured a gas line in an alley near 23rd and Winthrop.

Police said the suspect fled the scene, but officers smelled gas so they didn’t try to chase him. He is still on the loose as of Thursday night.

Police said they were able to close the leak around 10 p.m.

Homes near 24th and Winthrop and 23rd and Gilford were evacuated Thursday night, police said. Residents were able to return to their homes around 10 p.m.
