Iconic lighthouse atop hospital gets makeover

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)  –  The iconic lighthouse atop IU Health Methodist Hospital is getting a makeover.

Scaffolding appeared around the lighthouse Thursday morning and crews began removing the outer panels as part of an upgrade and sprucing up being done by the Methodist Hospital Foundation.

The lighthouse of Health Beacon is several stories tall and can be seen for miles at night when it is lighted. A cross at the very top actually rotates.

The beacon has served as the hospital’s “symbol” since 1933 when it was donated by Mary Hanson Carey.
