Police: Man who escaped officers wasn’t handcuffed

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) – A child molesting suspect who fled from Anderson authorities after he was arrested and taken to the police station may not have been handcuffed, according to a police investigation.

The Herald Bulletin reports the suspect eluded police for nearly two hours before he was recaptured Tuesday.

According a probable cause affidavit, the man was being exchanged between a detective to a uniformed officer at the police station when he escaped. He was later found hiding in a closet in an apartment house where he had removed a tracing ankle bracelet.

Anderson Police Chief Larry Crenshaw say that while suspects under arrest are often handcuffed, that isn’t always the case.

Crenshaw said the case is being reviewed and that officers from whom Carpenter escaped from could face disciplinary action.
