INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The band from Muncie’s newly consolidated high schools has won the Indiana State Fair Band Day competition, stopping a three-year winning streak by runner-up Winchester Community High School.

The Spirit of Muncie Band and Guard that won Saturday night’s contest began competing over the summer after forming from the consolidation of Muncie Central and Muncie Southside High Schools. The band is directed by Jeramiah Bowman and H. Clay Arnett.

The last time a Muncie school had won the Band Day competition was in 2008 when Southside took top honors.

The remaining bands in the Sweet 16, in order, were Richmond, Anderson, Centerville, Jay County, Noblesville, Northeastern, Kokomo, Hagerstown, Monroe Central, Mooresville, Southmont, Frankton, Yorktown and West Lafayette.

A total of 40 bands competed Saturday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
