MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — State Police officials say a passenger who was airlifted to a Indiana hospital following a serious crash on Sunday has died.
The two-vehicle crash happened on U.S. 31 south of Miami County Road 300 South around 2:30 p.m.
Preliminiarily, police say a 2007 Chevrolet Impala driven by a 17-year-old from Kokomo was southbound on U.S. 31 near Miami County Road 300 South when for an unknown reason the vehicle crossed the median and went into the northbound lanes of U.S. 31.
Police say the Impala hit a northbound 2013 Ford Edge, driven by a 33-year-old woman from Warsaw head on.
The passenger in the Impala, 22-year-old Terra Hildebrand from Logansport, was taken by medical helicopter to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne with life-threatening injuries. Police say Hildebrand died Monday morning. She was not wearing a seat belt, but police believe the crash impact was too severe for it to have saved her life.
The driver of the Impala was also flown to Lutheran Hospital. His condition is not known. The driver of the Ford suffered lacerations in the crash. Both were wearing seat belts, police say.
The crash is under investigation.
