ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) – Reggie Wayne will not play in Thursday’s preseason game against the Jets, according to Colts head coach Chuck Pagano.
“He’s going to see some action before September 7th. When that is, TBA,” said Pagano, who was also tight lipped about which other starters will or will not play.
Wayne’s absence means Colts fans should see a lot of rookie Donte Moncrief, one of the most pleasant surprises of training camp.
“You cannot coach 6-2, 220, 4.3, who can catch the ball,” said Pagano. “Smart guy. Tough guy. Really smooth athletic guy. Catches the ball well consistently so I mean he’s done a really good job to this point.”
Moncrief is listed as the fourth receiver on the initial depth chart in addition to the team’s starting kick returner, a job he did sparingly in college.
Thursday’s pro debut will be extra special for Moncrief. He left Ole Miss early to provide for his family, which includes a young daughter and his father, who has a bone disease that has left him unable to work.
“This game will be huge,” said Moncrief. “It’s always been a dream to get out there with these guys and compete.”
