PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — A man who stopped to help a couple that was pulled off on the side of the road died after he was hit by a passing vehicle.

Indiana State Police say it happened around 10:40 p.m. Monday in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the 32 mile marker in Putnam County.

Preliminarily police say a 2009 GMC Yukon driven by a woman from Seminole, Texas ran out of gas and was stopped on the emergency shoulder. Her husband went to a nearby home for help and when he returned the battery of the vehicle wasn’t working.

Police say a passerby, 22-year-old John D. Dugger of Terre Haute, stopped to help. He helped push the couple’s car up to his Volkswagen in an attempt to jump start it. Police believe in that time, Dugger stepped into the driving lane to speak with the man when he was struck by a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse.

Dugger was taken by medical helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital where he died early Tuesday morning. A woman was also taken to the hospital for a leg injury she suffered during the crash.

Police say Dugger’s Volkswagen was parked in front of the GMC, which did not have emergency flashers on, as the vehicle’s battery wasn’t working.

The crash is under investigation. No citations were issued and drugs and/or alcohol are not suspected in the crash. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
