Franklin students return to school after losing classmates

FRANKLIN, Ind. (WISH) — Students in Franklin head back to class on Wednesday for the first time after losing two of their classmates over the summer.

In June, Jason Moran and Michael Chadbourne died after jumping into the Big Blue River in Edinburgh. They had jumped in to save their friend Sarah Mclevish.

Mclevish suffered brain injuries and remains at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. A recent post on a Facebook page set up for her says she may be able to continue her recovery at home later this month.

Both Chadbourne and Moran were on the football team. Over the summer, the Franklin football coach told 24-Hour News 8 the team planned to honor both Moran and Chadbourne throughout the school year and during the first game of the season.

The town of Edinburgh says it is posting signs along the Big Blue River, warning swimmers and fishermen about the dangers. Officials are also urging anyone in and around the water to wear life jackets.
