INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Work that began on the Illinois Street bridge last year is almost complete, officials told 24-Hour News 8 on Thursday.

The bridge has been closed to motorists and the public for months near Fall Creek, prompting reroutes for drivers who used the bridge on their daily commute.

Officials with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works said on Thursday that the project is nearing completion. The road should be open on or around August 15.

After the bridge reopens there will still be work associated with the project left to do, including tree planting along the bank in October.

Officials say the project has stayed on schedule and that there have been minor cost overruns of about 3 percent. That’s mostly due to the need to replace more of the limestone fascia that was anticipated based on the original surface appearance. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
