INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana’s first statewide assessment of bullying at its public schools found more than 9,000 incidents of bullying at those schools during the 2013-14 school year.

The new assessment shows that 44 percent of the 9,396 reported bullying cases were verbal incidents and 21 percent were physical. The remainder included written or electronic threats and social shunning at the lunch table or elsewhere.

Indiana Safe Schools coordinator David Woodward tells The Indianapolis Star it’s too early to assess bullying in Indiana based on the initial data. But he says it provides a starting point to understand the extent of the problem.

A law passed last year by state lawmakers and supported by parents of bullying victims required Indiana’s traditional public schools to begin collecting data on bullying incidents. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
