Neighbor: Muncie police dug up basement for missing woman

MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) – The man living in a Muncie home where police have been searching for a missing Dunkirk woman is in the Delaware County Jail on drug charges, according to jail records.

Police started searching the home where 33-year-old Jeremiah Rupel lives on Wednesday. Officers were looking for Brianna Dibattiste, who went missing in June.

Policed searched the home at 311 South Council Street until about 2:30 on Thursday afternoon. Officers searched the area with metal detectors, rummaging through bags of clothes and blankets and digging in the yard.

Neighbors were out on the street watching the search progress all day Thursday.

“Everybody is curious. A bunch of wild rumors, you know. No one really knows what’s going on,” said Patricia Haggard.

Many of the neighbors were surprised police were at Ruple’s home because they never had any problems with him. Several neighbors said he often invited people to church.

“I feel bad for everyone involved. I feel bad for Brianna and her family, I feel bad for Jeremiah and his family,” said Haggard.

Shortly after police cleared the crime tape, the family who lives in the top level of this apartment came back home. They’ve lived there for about two months and say they’ve been dealing with an awful stench coming from the lower level of the home where Ruple lives.

The neighbors also told 24-Hour News 8 that police dug up the basement of the home. They said police asked them if they’ve ever heard any loud noises coming from the lower level of the home.

Police have not confirmed that they dug up the basement or released what they found, if anything.
