INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A Hoosier who held our country’s most powerful position was celebrated on Saturday.

It’s the 181st birthday for President Benjamin Harrison. A wreath laying ceremony was held in his honor at Crown Hill Cemetery where he’s buried.

The Crossroad of America Boy Scout Band performed and several members of the military gave speeches and told stories about Harrison’s impact.

Those in attendance say they hope children learned from the experience.

“It’s good to see the youth here. It’s something that children really aren’t being taught — our past presidents,” historian Terry Simpson said. “So it’s good to make them aware of our heritage and our former leaders.”

Harrison was the country’s 23rd president. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
