INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An IMPD officer escaped serious injury when his patrol car was struck by a semi early Monday.
The accident happened just before 3:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 465 near south East Street.
Witnesses reported seeing the cab of the semi on top back portion of the IMPD car. The officer was able to get out of the car and was talking with investigators.
The officer said he felt the air in a tire going low and started to slow down. When the officer looked into the rear view mirror, he saw the semi bearing down on him.
The semi struck the police car and pushed it some 500 feet before coming to a stop on top of the car.
The officer was injured and was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in stable condition.
Two lanes of westbound and eastbound I-465 were blocked while crews cleaned up the wreckage and officers completed their investigation.
