Man in custody after Bloomington home invasion

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) – A 42-year-old man is in custody, facing attempted rape charges in Bloomington, after police say he broke into a woman’s home around 3:00 Wednesday morning.

Police say it happened on the 1200 block of West 7th street.

42-year-old Andrew Carie, who has no permanent address, is charged with burglary, confinement, and attempted rape.

Investigators say a 30-year-old woman told them she’d woke up to a man lying on top of her, with his hand over her mouth. She told police she pushed him off her, screamed, and he ran away.

While checking the back of the house though, investigators heard rustling in the bushes and say they found Carie holding a flashlight.

He told investigators he’d seen the man police were looking for and had tried to chase him down.

Police say they believe entry was made through an open bathroom window, adding it appeared potted plants had been removed from the windowsill and placed outside. Police say they found Carie’s jacket on the same side of the house as the bathroom window.

Those living nearby said that’s not something they’d expected to hear.

“Definitely very angry. I don’t like to see that happen in my community, let alone that close to where I live,” said Chris Bush.

Police have also filed charges of “being a habitual offender” against Carie, which could add up to 20 years to his sentence if convicted.

Police say this latest incident is not connected to the attempted assault reported Monday morning along the B-line trail.
