New biking trails headed to Speedway-area

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) – New trails are in the works for the Speedway area, and they could connect miles of new trails to downtown Indianapolis.

With the booming popularity of the Monon Trail to the north, the non-profit group, Speedway Trail Association, is looking to add a similar trail to the west.

The town of Speedway already has a five-mile loop in place.  The loop uses two abandoned railroads, the P & E and the B & O.

Speedway is now working on getting the funding to pave all of it.

The president of the Speedway Trails Association, Beverly Katterhenry, been working for seven years to complete a five-mile loop around her town of Speedway.

Katterhenry says in order to connect to the White River Trail and then to connect to the Cultural Trail would cost about two million dollars.

That connection is on the state’s future trail map, but is currently not funded.

The Speedway Trails Association would like to speed the process up by getting private donors to contribute. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
