INDIANAPOLIS (WTHI) – There is no shortage of trains in the state, which means there is also no shortage of danger either.

Indiana Governor Mike Pence has declared this week Rail Safety Week.

Local law enforcement agencies and rail companies have teamed up to bring awareness to the dangers of ignoring crossing and trespassing laws. There will be public service announcements and events.

In 2013 alone there were 90 railroad crossing collisions, more than 30 people were injured and 16 people lost their lives.

There were also 19 trespasser deaths as well as 19 injuries. Now, officials hope this week will shine light on the terrifying issue. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
