INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A group in Indianapolis is working to get the Monon, and all other city greenways, open 24/7.
Indy Cog the city’s bicycling advocacy group has collected well over the needed 1,000 signatures to file a petition. The group will present it to Indy Parks on Thursday.
Two years ago, they got the trails to stay open dawn to dusk or 5am to 9pm. But they say Indy’s still behind other major cities when it comes to greenway hours, and it makes it dangerous for cyclists who are forced to ride on roads on off hours.
“If you look and do any research across the country, urban trails tend to have crime on them at some level because they can be isolated but our argument is, the more people are using the trail the more eyes on the street, as they call it, and we think that in a way it will police itself,” said Kevin Whited Executive Director of Indy Cog
In addition to the signatures, Indy Cog will present letters of support from area businesses and non-profits.
