Interstate shut down while police capture runaway horse

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana State Police say they had to shut down an interstate in Indianapolis to catch a runaway horse early Wednesday.

It happened on Interstate 74 near South Post Road. Police say the horse got out of a fenced in area and was walking near the westbound lanes of I-74 around 3:30 a.m.

An IMPD officer who also responded happened to have a rope and bridle in his trunk. The officer was able to lead the horse away from the interstate and safely return it to its owners.

Officers shut down both east and westbound I-74 while they got the horse under control.

Police say a section of the fence to the property adjacent to the interstate had been damaged from a previous accident. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
