Refinery explosion slightly injures one worker

WHITING, Ind. (WISH) — One worker was slightly injured in an explosion and fire at a BP Refinery in northwest Indiana late Wednesday.

It happened around 9 p.m. in Whiting, in Lake County. A BP spokesperson says an “operational incident” caused the explosion.

One worker was taken to an area hospital as a precaution and was released overnight.

The fire was put out by the refinery’s in-house fire department within two hours.

BP officials say operations at the plant were not seriously affected and continues to produce products for their customers.

An explosion at the plant on the same date in 1955 killed two people. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
