Indianapolis teen nominated for Maytag Dependable Leader Award

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A 16-year-old is in the running to win $50,000, but she needs help from the community to win.

Ruby Smith was named a finalist in for the Maytag Dependable Leader Award that lets American’s vote on the most deserving teen to win.

Smith was selected by Maytag and Boys and Girls Clubs of America as one of five finalists. If Smith wins she will get $50,000. $20,000 will be in the form of a scholarship and the rest of the money will be donated to her club to help provide educational assistance.

For 10 years Smith has been a part of the Lilly Boys and Girls Club in Indianapolis, she has completed around 100 hours of volunteer work. She also got a grant in 2013 to start the program “Look in a Book.” The program helps improve literacy by letting club teens read aloud to groups of younger club members.

Smith was nominated by Robert Marshal the unit director at Boys and Girls Clubs of Indianapolis – Lilly Unit.
