COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) — SWAT negotiators were called to a home in Columbus on Thursday after the report of a domestic disturbance.

Negotiators were called to the 2600 block of Wedgewood Drive shortly before 11 a.m. A woman told police she was held against her will in the home for around four hours before escaping.

The woman told police the man threatened to harm himself and others, which prompted the call for the Columbus Police Department SWAT. They attempted to make contact with the man, but those attempts failed. Police then fired a chemical irritant into the home to try and get the man to exit.

Officers entered the home and arrested Zak Shafer, 42, of Columbus, around 3 p.m.

Shafer was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was preliminarily charged with Invasion of Privacy, a Class A misdemeanor and Resisting Law Enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor.
