VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – Indiana State Police troopers say they pulled over an impaired driver in a construction zone on Tuesday.
It happened around 1:30 p.m. According to police, an Indiana State trooper spotted a Chevy Impala driving erratically in the southbound lanes of US 41 near Davis Avenue in Terre Haute.
After stopping the car, the trooper smelled what appeared to be marijuana.
During further investigation, the trooper found the driver to be unsteady on his feet, nervous, and appeared to kick something under the vehicle.
A search under the car found about 18 grams of suspected marijuana in a plastic bag.
After searching the car, officers found less than three grams of suspected marijuana, along with Schedule IV prescription pills, that the driver didn’t have a prescription to.
After failing a field sobriety test, police arrested 24-year-old Bradley T.J. Chowning of Terre Haute. He was preliminarily charged with possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, operating while intoxicated, and possession of marijuana.
A passenger in the car, 32-year-old Richard T. Gibbs also from Terre Haute, was arrested on a failure to appear warrant.
Both men were being held in the Vigo County Jail on Tuesday.
