VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – The alleged Pennsylvania state trooper shooter used to live in Vigo County in the 1990’s, according to 24-Hour News 8’s partners, WTHI.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office says Eric Frein once lived and attended elementary school in Vigo County.

Frein’s family moved away when he was 11 years old. Frein wasn’t born in Vigo County, but did live here in the early 1990’s.

31-year-old Frein is the suspect in the September 12 ambush that left Corporal Byron Dickson dead and another trooper injured. This happened outside the Pennsylvania State Police barracks.

Pennsylvania police are still searching for Frein in northeastern Pennsylvania. The FBI has named him one of the 10 most wanted fugitives.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office says they have no reason to believe Frein is in the Wabash Valley.

However, local law enforcement has been made aware of the fact he spent a few of his childhood years here. They’re keeping their eyes open for officer safety, but aren’t under the impression Frein will return to the Valley. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
