TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – The Terre Haute Police Department said a woman died after being shot just after 7:30 Sunday morning.
Officers were told she shot herself. When they arrived at the scene, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest with a man performing CPR on her.
The victim was taken to Union Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
The suspect, who police have identified as Joseph Diehl, and the victim were boyfriend and girlfriend, according to police. He was taken in for questioning on Sunday.
Police say the incident occurred after Diehl presented his gun. During an argument, the victim was able to get ahold of the gun. Diehl said when he was trying to get the gun back in his possession, the victim was shot and killed.
Diehl was arrested on preliminary charges of reckless homicide.
Police said they’re continuing to investigate this homicide.
The name of the victim has not been released as of Sunday night.
