VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — The man accused of shooting a fellow Indiana State University student will make his first appearance in court on Monday.

Twenty-one-year-old Calvin McCauley from Indianapolis is scheduled to appear before a Vigo County judge at 1:30 p.m.

Police arrested McCauley on Sunday on a preliminary charge of attempted murder. He is accused of shooting another student in a residence hall stairwell Saturday night.

Sunday, 24-Hour News 8 spoke with authorities about their communication with students as they searched for the suspect.

“Our concern was the entire campus, but I think we had to concentrate on (the Lincoln Quad) to make sure these people felt as safe as they could,” Police Chief Joseph Newport said. “And then during the course of the night we made sure that there were a couple of updates as we developed information.”

Authorities say the 20-year-old victim is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
