INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis First Lady Winnie Ballard led hundreds of people on a walk to raise awareness, and ways to prevent heart disease.

Heart disease is the number one killer of Hoosiers every year.

The one-mile walk through downtown Indianapolis was the first major U.S. based World Heart Day event.

Walking just 20-minutes a day can cut the risk of heart disease and stroke.

“Every step counts, every opportunity to prevent the disease is really what we need to focus on. And everybody and anyone can do it. You don’t have to be an elite athlete. You can come as you are as you’re dressed and make a positive movement forward,” said Ballard

Monday’s walk started at Presidential Palace Park on east Washington and ended on Monument circle. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
