Man escapes with dog as fire destroys home

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A man and his dog were forced to flee their east side home after a fire broke out early Monday.

At 1:21 a.m. fire crews were called to the 5100 block of East Michigan Street. That scene is just east of Emerson Avenue.

John Martin told firefighters he was asleep upstairs when he awoke to the sound of a fire in the downstairs portion of his home.

When he went to investigate he found flames in his living room. He said he grabbed the family’s Shih Tzu, Rascal, and fled out the back door of the home.

Firefighters arrived to heavy flames to the two story home.  The blaze traveled from the first floor to the attic where fire destroyed the upper floor.

While some of the fire crews went inside the home to battle flames, it was determined the home might collapse and crews were ordered out of the structure where they continued to battle the flames.

No injuries were reported. Damage to the home has been estimated at $150,000.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
