LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — A funeral and burial have been held for an 88-year-old Lafayette man whose body authorities say remained in his home for nine months before his death was reported in May.

About two dozen people attended a funeral Mass Thursday at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for Gerald Gavan. Tippecanoe County Coroner Donna Avolt tells the Journal & Courier that the World War II veteran was buried next to his mother.

County Prosecutor Pat Harrington says he is still considering whether to file any criminal charges surrounding Gavan’s death.

A forensic entomologist determined Gavan had been dead since at least July 2013. Police found his body May 3 on his living room floor.
