Jockey, 17, dies after accident at Indiana Grand race track

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) – A jockey died following an accident during a race Tuesday evening at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino, according to the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

The jockey, 17-year-old Juan Saez, was injured during the eighth race at the course in Shelbyville when he fell off his horse. The final race of the event was canceled following the incident. The track announcer in Shelbyville said via Twitter that Wednesday’s races were also canceled.

Eric Clark with the Shelbyville Fire Department told 24-Hour News 8 they were called around 5:40 p.m. to meet an ambulance at the Shelbyville Airport near the track.

Saez was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital via medical helicopter. He died shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday.

According to a news release on Indiana Grand Racing and Casino’s website, it is believed that Montezuma Express, ridden by Saez clipped the heels of the horse in front of him. As a result Saez’s horse fell, kicking him off the horse.

Initial reports were that Montezuma Express was euthanized as a result of the incident, but the horse’s owner/trainer confirmed to 24-Hour News 8 on Wednesday that did not happen.

A separate incident on the track at the top of the stretch caused Platitude to fall and kick his jockey, Marcelino Pedroza, off his horse. Platitude was euthanized. Pedroza was not taken to the hospital after the incident. Officials do not believe the incidents were related.
