INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Heather Wilson watched her son execute martial art techniques with confidence inside Dragonfly Martial Arts Academy in Plainfield. The academy teaches children ages 5-13 how to bully proof themselves from bullies.
Wilson’s son has been the victim of bullying, but since she’s enrolled him in the academy she has seen his confidence increase in confronting bullies.
“I feel a lot better, he’s the type of kid that could help someone else now,” said Wilson.
Kenneth Bigbee Jr., is the owner, operator, and instructor of the academy. He teaches his students how to avoid confrontation, how to show courage, and how to walk away from trouble. Lastly, the students are equip with how to defend themselves if all other measures have been exhausted.
“Use your mental skills to nullify the situation before a fight happens,” said Bigbee during an interview with 24-Hour News 8.
It’s estimated that more than 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year, according to dosomething.org. Because of those alarming numbers, Bigbee is offering two free bully proof sessions.
“Kids who are bullied can become anxious, scared, anti-social and suffer from low self-esteem that usually carries over into adulthood,” said Bigbee. “By offering free seminars we hope to help both boys and girls learn how to avoid this epidemic.”
Parents interested in signing their children up must register their child before they can participate in the free seminars. Parents can enroll their child by clicking here or calling 877.889.5425.
All classes last about 45 minutes. The two free classes will be held on Saturday October 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., or 11:00 a.m.
