INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Maintenance crews boarded up windows Thursday after a fire ripped through the Winchester Village Apartments on 8000 block of Madison Avenue.
The Indianapolis Fire Department rushed to the scene. Once on the scene, IFD rescued people from the third floor of the apartment complex.
A man in serious condition was rushed to the hospital and about 25 people are out of a home.
IFD estimates 11 units were damaged and there’s about $500,000 worth of damages to the apartment building.
According to IFD, all of the victims had renters insurance.
“It’s scary things could happen so fast,” said Neighbor Amanda Smith.
A good majority of residents at Winchester Village Apartments are Burmese, which initially caused a language barrier for rescuers.
Exodus Refugee Immigration is working with families displaced by the fire. According to the apartment complex, all of the residents involved in the fire have found a temporary place to stay.
