LAGRANGE, Ind. (WANE) – With the encouragement from a Facebook message, Leif Erikson of LaGrange checked his Hoosier Lotto ticket for the October 1 drawing. He and his wife won $9 million.

The couple, married 41 years, purchased the winning ticket at the Shell gas station at 6917 Old US 27 in Fremont.

“This is unbelievable, but I think it is finally starting to settle on us,” Leif Erikson told the Hoosier Lottery.

Erikson’s wife, Loretta, convinced her husband who has been a private contractor hauling mail for over 20 years to retire after winning. The Eriksons have two children and six grandchildren. They plan on investing the money so they can live comfortably and enjoy their family. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
