North Vernon police arrest 2 in death investigation

NORTH VERNON, Ind. (WISH) – Police arrested two people accused of having an involvement with a dead body found on Friday in North Vernon.

Police arrested two men, JoVonnie Antonio Mayes, 21, of Seymour and Jody Michael Brooks, 22, of North Vernon according to a news release received by 24-Hour News 8’s news partners at the Columbus Republic.

Police located the pair in Harrison County in possession of a truck that belonged to the deceased, Richard Smith, 52 of Dunpoint.

Smith’s body was found near 24 N. Fifth Street on Friday afternoon.

Police connected Mayes and Brooks to the crime and located them near Corydon with the stolen truck.

Mayes and Brooks are preliminarily charged with murder, robbery and two counts of auto theft. They were arrested and taken to the Jennings County Jail without bond.
