HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a 19-year-old woman whose body was found in a Hammond motel had been strangled.

The Lake County coroner’s office on Sunday identified the victim as Afrika Hardy. Officials didn’t know where she was from.

Hammond police Lt. Rich Hoyda says police discovered her body 9:30 p.m. Friday at a Motel 6 after someone called police concerned about her. Hoyda says the discovery of her body led police to a 43-year-old Gary man, who was taken in for questioning. Hoyda says the man confessed to that killing and also told them where several more victims were located. That led police in Gary to find the bodies of three more women who have not been identified.

Hoyda says the man’s name is being withheld because he has not been charged. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
