INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An ex-offender is helping give back to his community after nine years behind bars.
When Leonard Owens was released from jail, he didn’t like what he saw in his Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood where he lived for 16 years. So, on Saturday, he along with several other organizations including police departments and parole officers, hit the pavement to clean up this area by Washington Park.
“So, he started talking about it and seeing if he could get people involved and it’s amazing the amount of people that’s involved,” James Hoagland with Our Brothers, Our Sisters Place said.
“It make you feel great. Why should we live in a ran down places when all it takes is a little initiative,” Owens told 24-Hour News 8.
Owens said he learned some lessons while in jail and is ready to give back.
There were contractors brought in who worked on homes there from replacing gutters and shingles to installing handicap ramps.
