VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – One person is dead and two people were hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash involving a stolen van in Vigo County.

The collision happened Saturday afternoon on U.S. 40 at Miami Gardens Road, a mile east of Seelyville.

Officers said a red mustang was traveling eastbound on U.S. 40 and was hit head-on by a gold van that was driving westbound.

It is believed the van crossed the center line. At that point, the driver and passenger of the van ran from the scene on foot.

A short time later, the driver was arrested and life-lined to Methodist Hospital, due to spine and neck injuries as a result of the crash.

The driver of the mustang was also life-lined to Methodist where he is undergoing treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

The passenger in the Mustang was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials believe alcohol and drugs could have played a factor. The van was reported stolen out of Clark County, Illinois.

Vigo County Sheriff’s Deputies now have the woman passenger in custody. Dawn Lafoutain was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Lafountain is preliminarily charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and leaving the scene of a serious bodily injury accident.

Police said more charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

“Our evidence technicians are collecting evidence from the vehicles so that we can put together both the traffic accident reconstruction as well as a criminal report for the prosecutor’s office,” said Major Jeff Fox with the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office.
