INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Plans are being developed to transform a street along the Statehouse into a public plaza to commemorate Indiana’s 2016 bicentennial of statehood.

The state Department of Administration has hired a company to design a $2 million plaza along a two-block stretch of Senate Avenue on the west side of the Statehouse.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports the Legislature would still need to appropriate money for the plaza project, along with a $2.5 million project to create a Statehouse visitors center at the neighboring State Library and repair a tunnel that connects the buildings.

State Sen. Jim Merritt is a member of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission. He says officials have been working hard to plan a project the state can be proud of in connection with the bicentennial.
