Street race may have led to crash, house fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were investigating Monday after a street race ended with a vehicle crash and a nearby house fire on the city’s north side.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m. police responded to a report of a car that had crashed into the large brick sign for John Strange Elementary School at East 62nd and Olney streets. The vehicle and the sign were significantly damaged. Police say the driver fled the scene.

Police say two vehicles were speeding and lost control when they turned. One vehicle hit the school sign. The driver of the second vehicle told police as his car struck the curb, he heard something break but drove on to his home nearby in the 6200 block of North Olney Street. The driver said he pulled the car into the garage and closed the door.

Police followed a trail of fluids that led them to the house. That’s where police say they spotted smoke coming from the garage and called the fire department.

Firefighters say the fire began with the vehicle and spread to the garage. The driver of the second vehicle was taken into police custody.
