INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 45-year-old woman and two dogs died in a house fire Tuesday afternoon, and the fire department says the house didn’t have working smoke detectors.
The fire started around 1:30 p.m. in the 6700 block of East 20th Street. No official cause of the fire had been determined as of 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, but initial investigating indicates it was an accident possibly caused by smoking.
Firefighters found 45-year-old Michelle O’Brien in the home and tried to revive her, but she was declared dead at the scene. Two pet pit bulls, Harley and Sugar, also died in the fire.
The home is located just east of 21st Street and Arlington Avenue.
IFD spokeswoman Rita Reith said it’s the 18th fire death IFD has handled this year.
The home had about $110,00 worth of damage from the fire.
