WABASH COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) An off-duty police officer was killed in a crash Monday afternoon in Wabash County.
At 3:42 p.m., Indiana State Police and the Wabash County Sheriff’s Department were called to a crash involving three vehicles on State Road 15.
A preliminary investigation showed that David Rigney, 39, of LaFontaine, was headed south in an SUV on State Road 15 near 5394 South. He hit a slick spot in the road and fishtailed into the northbound lane of State Road 15.
A northbound school bus hit the driver’s side door of the SUV. A car driven by Cassandra Pyles, 29, of Marion, was also headed south on State Road 15 behind the SUV. After the SUV was hit hit by the bus, it was pushed back into the southbound lane, striking Pyles’ car. She was not hurt.
Rigney, an officer with the North Manchester Police Department, was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were 39 children on the Metropolitan School District of Wabash County bus. The driver, 55-year-old Daniel Dale of Wabash was not hurt, but some children complained of pain. Paramedics checked them out at the scene and no one was taken to a hospital.
This crash is still under investigation, but at this time neither the use of alcohol nor drugs is suspected as having contributed to this crash. All drivers in the crash were wearing seat belts.
