K-9 officer locates drugs on walk with handler

PERU, Ind. (WISH) – A K-9 officer put his training to good use on Friday night when his handler took him for a walk in the parking lot of the Miami County Jail.

Deputy Joe Gentile and his newly trained K-9 Aik were walking the grounds of the jail when Aik ran across the parking lot, according to 24-Hour News 8’s news partner at the Pharos-Tribune.

The officer said the Aik ran to a parked pick-up truck and indicated drugs were inside the vehicle. Inside the truck the officer found 47-year-old Duane Rutledge sitting in the passenger seat.

Gentile found two grams of marijuana inside a cigarette pack.

Aik was new to the department this year and went through a six-week training course with Gentile. Part of the training includes planting drugs around the jail for Aik to locate, which paid off during Friday’s unexpected arrest.

Rutledge was preliminarily charged with possession of marijuana.
